Focus
“The furry fandom is a subculture interested in anthropomorphic animal characters. Some examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, speaking, walking on two legs, and wearing clothes.” is a definition often cited for the community.
However, this can be somewhat of a generalization/simplification, as what defines the community, why people are interested in the fandom, and what activities the fandom participates in can vary greatly.
That being said, the definition above is more or less correct in stating that the fandom centers itself around a common interest in the idea of anthropomorphic animals, and animals in general. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the only focus, or the only interest for many people. Some could be interested in artwork, related media, cosplay, and more.
Culture
Furries are often large proponents for self-expression. The fandom often focuses on ideas around self-expression, identity, orientation, and so on. Generally, the fandom is a safe space/is very welcoming to members of the LGBTQ+ community. Though these ideas are very prevalent and discussed among community members, the fandom also participates in a multitude of different activities, and engages in a multitude of different ways.
It’s worth noting that anyone can be a furry, and it simply depends on whether or not they choose to have that label. It’s important to remember that being a furry is not an identity, and is simply a hobby. Numerous people have likened it to other fandoms/communities.
